What Opportunities Graphic Design Can Save Your Life

Few weeks ago i went to an exhibition called 'Can graphic design saves your life?' from Welcome collection, the exhibition contain design around the theme of health from the past, some of the most ground breaking graphic design ever made. The following will be the review of selected part of the exhibition.

A cigarette packaging design for Marlboro Red in the mid 40's.

This package design used coding as its core, which is rather surprising, i'm pretty sure that computer language is not things that you will see everyday in the 40's, but yet the designer choose to use computer language to represent the harm of the cigarette in such an informative tone of voice, by giving precise number down to minute to warn the consumer how bad are cigarette to your health, which personally i think it's extremely impressive, the designer behind this pin pointed the biggest defect of nowadays cigarette packaging, although they contain disgusting imagery saying 'there is a possibility you will become this this and this.', it's just simply not effective enough, most of the people alive in this world are short-sighted, and further more we are dealing with those who know cigarette are bad for them but still smoke, a picture of a corrupted lungs with the word 'possibility' on it probably wouldn't stop them from smoking it. This design changed the perspective, it is as straight forward as you can see, each cigarette wipe out 11 mins from your life,no chances involved which eliminated the optimism bias. But considering the cigarette company will want money over the consumer's health, i can see why they are not using this kind of packaging .

Hand-painted mural – The wall of Ebola's symptoms

by Stephen Doe

3 years ago there was an Ebola outbreak occurred in West Africa, during the outbreak, poster and warning were placed all over the place, to try to give out the information in how to decrease the chance of getting infected and also how to diagnose whether or not you are infected, but unfortunately since West Africa were mainly formed by undeveloped countries, the education level of the citizens wasn't as high as developed countries like England and America, there are people who are not able to read due to differ reason, maybe because of language (Liberia population speaks more than 30 languages) or even maybe just because they think the disease are not as serious as the government said, Stephen Doe saw the problem and he tried to solve it, He go out to the street during the outbreak and painted a red wall with his illustration to try to raise awareness and also to warn others about this dangerous disease.

By all means i totally respect what this man were trying to do, but to be honest although he used red to represent danger, the work wasn't as alarming as it should be, maybe it's because the photo was taken in the making process but the way he execute this idea probably wasn't ideal. Despite of the feeling of danger, red also grabs people attention since you don't always see a bright red wall in the middle of West Africa, the illustration and typography was clean and easy to understand, in another word,  the painter did a good job in terms of spreading the information to those who can't read.
